Aspen Health Care Solutions UK was contracted by the Department of International Development to assist in the Ebola Response in Sierra Leone.As part of this Aspen Healthcare were looking for a number of clinical staff including Nurses, to provide expertise and support.

The staff were required to work in the UK Kerry Town Ebola Treatment Unit for Healthcare Workers.

Experience, Qualifications and Documentation Required

Registered Nurses

Registered Nurses Salary & Requirements

Weekly Salary:

  • In Sierra Leone: £1,163.46
  • Out of Country: £1,011.71

Essential:

  • Qualified nurse with at least 3 years of clinical experience and ward management, and currently practicing.

  • Registered with own country general nursing council.
  • Previous experience in clinical infectious diseases.
  • Previous experience of working in isolation unit, strong understanding of infection control risks.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary, multi-cultural team.
  • Ability to motivate and support team in stressful situations.
  • Excellent fluency in English including clinical terminology.

Desired:

  • Previous experience of working on haemorrhagic fever management.
  • Previous experience working within health facilities in low income countries.
  • Previous experience and knowledge of West Africa.

  • Maintenance of recency of practice as defined by registration body
  • Completion of CPD requirements of relevant College
  • Previous experience in medical administration/leadership
  • Previous experience in clinical infectious diseases.
  • Previous experience working in an isolation unit and a strong understanding of infection control risks.

Accommodation

  • All Aspen personnel will be accommodated at The Place located in Tokeh.
  • All efforts will be made to provide personnel with individual rooms, however at times personnel must be prepared to share accommodation.
  • All meals will be provided.  The Place operates a club were beverages and snacks can be purchased
  • Personnel can expect a laundry service to operate once a week and a maximum of twice a week.  There are no self-service laundry facilities at The Place or in Tokeh
  • There is no gym at The Place or Tokeh.  Walking and jogging are possible.

    This is a post about historical work placements in Sierra Leone. If you want to work in the UK please see the information below which may be of use.

    There are a couple of issues that you need to consider from the outset. Firstly, are you able to get a visa to reside and work in the UK? Secondly, you need to be registered with the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council) http://www.nmc.org.uk.

    I’m not an expert with immigration but you will need to contact the Home Office Border & Immigration Agency https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-visas-and-immigration. Nursing has been reinstated on the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) which means you should be in a position to apply for and accept jobs directly – dependent on you being registered with the NMC.

    The NMC have a process for registering overseas Nurses. Their website provides all the information you need along with direct contact details.
