Hi Nigel!

The growth is coming from a number of factors:

1. Our aging population means that more people are coming into long-term care just as many of our nurses are retiring. I believe the median age of nurses right now is 46.

2. People are living longer, and are being sustained longer when they have a chronic disease, and are therefore in need of more long-term healthcare.

3. US colleges can't accept nearly enough of the qualified applicants. Even colleges that have nearly tripled their program find themselves overwhelmed by applications.

The economy is poor right now, and people are working longer and avoiding healthcare. As the US economy improves and these workers wrap up their career, and when our healthcare reform kicks in in 2014, we'll see an even greater demand.

Hi Jaques,

Wow! Growth in Healthcare - sounds too good to be true. Is this growth driven by the services provided for with insurance covered healthcare?

i got my degree in the philippines in 1992, worked in A+E 1993 to 2001 in Manila. From there, I moved to London in Nov 2001 and has been working as a cardiac nurse up to the present. I have applied to register with the NCNZ. Got all my documents accepted except the school papers. Because March the 1st this year, they have changed the way the assess the applications of IQN and so I am I guess the unlucky one. It used to be only record of transcripts and clinical hours which are certified by the college dean. Now the NCNZ wants the whole copy of the nursing course syllabus...which is impossible to send to them due to copyright laws. Each time my school sends an official docu, the NZNQ rejects it asks for more. And this has been going on for 2 months now. Sooo frustrating.

Hi Nigel,

My other half is just about qualify as a nurse (and is doing the degree course at University). We would like to move out to Oz but we are not sure about the qualifications required. We have family in WA but some elderly relatives in the UK too. A couple of questions then:

How long does the OH have to work as a nurse in the UK before being considered competent to become a nurse in Oz?
Would we be restricted in where we lived if we went over?
Do you think we could go over, become resident and then return to the UK until the elderly parents are no longer with us? (ie do you have to stay for a certain amount of time before you can leave for a protracted period and, having departed for, say, 5 years, can you come back in?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Gillian,

In general the minimum experience that is currently required is 6 months. However there are momentary opportunities to get onto programmes designed to help nurses who have qualified abroad and have not yet got any experience. These schemes effectively give those nurses lucky enough to get on them enough experience to then proceed in the normal way.

Unfortunately getting information about these schemes before they have already been filled is very difficult.

My advice would be to get 6 months experience in the UK before applying for work. However if yhou have managed to get a contract then you can start the emmigration process and have time to plan your move.

Please contact our emmigration consultant using the contact form here:

Good luck,
